Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz

Here’s an unwritten rule of sports journalism that you’ll want to remember if you’re considering a career change. A change of opinion is frowned upon.

Despite the fact that any mature human being should be allowed to change their minds (more information can, at times, lead to making a better decision if you haven’t figured that out), people have an innate ability to remember something you said six months ago, even if you can’t.

So, if you ever express your opinion on something and change it later, you’ll be accused of flip-flopping. If you can deal with that, you’ll have a long career.

All that’s been said to say this. If you wanted Zach Ertz back, and then wanted him to leave, and then, found yourself totally stoked, no one would blame you. Here’s the thing though. The challenge flag has been thrown, and the reason for that is this.

Two games into the season, Ertz’s last hoorah with the only team he’s ever played for isn’t going well. Here’s why he shouldn’t be given up on yet.

The Philadelphia Eagles ignored Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert in Week 2 (three catches for 30 yards between them), but we’ve learned something about that talented trio of wide receivers. DeVonta Smith, Jalen Reagor, and Quez Watkins aren’t pulling down any contested catches. The Birds are going to have to get the tight ends involved in this passing game.

So upon further review, the call stands as called. It’s a good thing that Zach Ertz is on this team, but in fairness, he’s going to have to be more involved. It’s too often that he looks uninterested and uninvolved in what’s going on. Put an asterisk by Ertz’s name. We’ll dig into this one a little more as the season moves forward.
