Philadelphia Eagles trade proposal number 2: Birds land Odell Beckham Jr.

Yes… Yes… We know. The Philadelphia Eagles have invested a lot of draft capital into improving the wide receiver position over the past three seasons. Yes, there are more pressing needs than adding another. This team needs to strengthen their linebacker core before they do anything else, but come on. This is Odell Beckham Jr., and here’s something that you have to understand if you’ve forgotten this.

Put this guy in the right situation, and he’ll again, catapult himself back into the conversation of being one of the game’s best wide receivers. His continued tenure with the Cleveland Browns clearly doesn’t qualify as the best situation for him as that partnership hasn’t been good for the Browns or for Odell as of late.

The Eagles, again despite having more pressing needs, must do their due diligence if a player of OBJ’s stature becomes the subject of trade talks. They have talented pass catchers in Quez Watkins, DeVonta Smith, and Jalen Reagor. All of which have plenty of speed.

Still, these guys haven’t matured to the point that they’re going to come down with a ton of 50/50 balls, nor are they in a position, at this point of their career, where they’re consistently winning in one-on-one battles.

Part of the reason for that is the fact that wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead is doing a below-average job of bringing guys along. The argument can be also be made, however, that they could benefit from a veteran presence in the room. OBJ can provide all of that as well as the playmaking presence that this Eagles team still seems to be missing.

Yes, adding Odell Beckham Jr. may not be a necessity at this time, but how can you argue against the fact that he makes the offense better? The Browns are in a position that Philly is familiar with. They aren’t going to get everything that they want in a trade for a player that they clearly need to move on from. That means that the Birds can get OBJ for less than one might expect.

In this scenario, Philly lands a former rival, one of the best at his position. The Eagles give up a second-round draft choice in 2022 and the fifth-round draft choice that they gained by trading Zach Ertz.
