Possible replacements for Nick Sirianni: Duce Staley

Current status: Detroit Lions assistant head coach & running backs coach

After the decision was made to move on from Doug Pederson, there was a growing contingent that wanted to see Duce Staley become the 24th head coach in franchise history. After all, it made sense seeing as how he held the title of the assistant head coach and all.

Some of us are still wondering why the second in command doesn’t simply slide into the captain’s chair upon the captain’s exit, but there’s no use in crying over spilled milk. Duce wound up in Detroit as the assistant head coach/running backs coach of the Lions.

Sure, it would have seemed as though he would have been the natural successor to Pederson. Then again, some say he had grown weary of the organization anyway, citing issues like the franchise’s continued coddling of Carson Wentz. Still, whether you agree with that or not, here’s what can’t be denied.

When Staley left, Philly lost one of the more respected coaches on its staff. Duce commanded respect, and though we could be wrong about this, it doesn’t seem like that same respect is shown to Nick Sirianni or Jonathan Gannon.

How about a do-over? A lot of people are in favor. Staley doesn’t seem like a guy that’s ready to draw up game plans to topple Bill Belichick-led teams, but with two brilliant coordinators in his corner, he could be solid.
