10 Sub-radar Philadelphia Eagles and how they can help a playoff push
By Hunter Doyle
What will Gainwell’s role be in the Philadelphia Eagles offense?
Is it fair to say that any of the Eagles’ running backs are under the radar at this point? No. That being said, with Miles Sanders and Jordan Howard set to carry the load these final four weeks, Boston Scott and Kenneth Gainwell could find themselves at the back of the depth chart again.
That doesn’t mean there won’t be opportunities for both of them. Outside of the fumble in MetLife, Scott has been impressive in his snaps.
Gainwell might be more suited to run out of the shotgun than under center but he has been pretty fun to watch as well. There was a fumble in Kansas City on which he was luckily ruled down. Overall, he has demonstrated great vision and patience as well as solidifying himself as an exceptional pass protector.
As we mentioned a few weeks ago, Philly needs to consider giving him more reps at wideout. Behind Dallas Goedert, DeVonta Smith, and Quez Watkins the Birds could use another weapon through the air.
Gainwell has shown that he is a capable pass catcher and route runner out of the backfield and split out wide. We covered multiple designs that the Eagles have drawn up or could draw up to get him involved in that regard.
He is too talented to keep off of the field. Sanders and Howard are 1A and 1B and the Birds go 12 personnel frequently so opportunities are limited. Don’t be surprised if they occasionally use Gainwell as a decoy or design a few plays to get him the ball in space though.
Lastly, the kick return unit could use some major help. The blocking hasn’t been great but it’s no secret that Jalen Reagor has struggled back there. Watkins hasn’t secured that spot either. It’d be intriguing to see how Gainwell does with more reps.
