54. . . . Davion Taylor, linebacker. 52. player

Jonathan Gannon is very intrigued with Eagles LB Davion Taylor and vice versa.

He isn’t the biggest star on the Eagles’ defense. He wasn’t necessarily someone that dominated draft-day discussions when 2020’s selection meeting rolled around. Davion Taylor didn’t even play high school football due to his family’s religious beliefs.

He was never an All-American or a Pac-12 all-star, but when Philadelphia was on the clock with the 103rd-overall selection during Round 3 of the NFL Draft, this is who they wanted.

In addition to playing football, Taylor was a track star with the Colorado Buffaloes and the Coahoma Community College Tigers before transferring to Boulder. Since he arrived in Philly, we’ve asked the same question several times. Yeah, he’s fast, but can he play linebacker?

He didn’t get much of a shot in Jim Schwartz’s defensive scheme, and when he did, it wasn’t pretty. He got more of a shot in Gannon’s scheme, perhaps out of necessity, but we’ve seen the light bulb come on. Taylor had some impressive moments before seeing his season end with a trip to the team’s injured reserve.

It’s year three already, often a make-or-break season for young NFL stars. Anything can happen. The Birds could draft a linebacker. They could sign one in free agency. T.J. Edwards can even take another step.

Taylor’s someone the Eagles like. He’s also someone Gannon likes (and vice versa). There’s no guarantee, if J.G. ever left, that he wouldn’t take Taylor with him.
