The Eagles never take defensive backs in Round 1, but might they make an exception for a special talent?

A trade is something that is undoubtedly on Howie Roseman’s radar. The Eagles made a trade involving all three first-rounders they held before the 2022 Draft and two trades with their lone first-round selection in 2021. Trading down is something that could especially benefit the Eagles in 2023, as they currently hold zero picks in rounds four, five, and six.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a team that finds themselves in a position to trade up if Kentucky quarterback Will Levis slips to the tenth overall pick. This would be the optimal move for Philly, as precedent suggests they could likely receive Tampa’s 2024 first-round pick from the deal.

A trade back for the 19th overall pick and 2024 first for the tenth pick and likely another mid-round pick would be ideal. However, more options for trade downs will become available on draft day, and the Eagles could even move back anywhere. These are some prospects who the Eagles should be high on if a trade down into the teens or twenties does take place.

. player. 829. . . . Brian Branch, DB, Alabama

Two months ago, we discussed how Brian Branch has the potential to fill a variety of roles that the Eagles now need to fill. Following the departure of C. J. Gardner-Johson, that seems more true now than ever. Branch has the football IQ, the speed, and the ability to defend the ball in the air which would be a perfect fit for defending the middle of the field on defense.

Branch also can defend the run that few defensive backs possess. His versatility allows him to play both outside and slot cornerback and safety. Branch could even serve as an extra defender in the box on blitzes and short-yardage situations. Branch alongside new addition Terrell Edmunds would be a productive safety tandem for Philadelphia in 2023.
