The Eagles’ backup safeties will see more playing time this season, and both have a lot to prove.

With the loss of Marcus Epps and C.J. Gardner-Johnson, both of the Eagles’ starting safeties from last season, the Birds may look to their bench for the next man up. Philly signed Terrell Edmunds to a 1-year deal recently, but if the Birds want a potential long-term option at safety without having to waste a high draft pick or break the bank, they’d be better off looking in-house.

. . . Reed Blankenship, safety. 32. player. 54

Last season, Reed Blankenship got a fair amount of snaps due in the wake of C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s injury, and pending any moves in the draft, he will likely enjoy a starting role next year. Blankenship has shown flashes and definitely played above what was expected of him; however, being an undrafted rookie last season means that he still has a lot to prove. If things don’t work out, he may be relegated back to the bench for the foreseeable future. His coaches love him. That’s a plus.

54. . . . K'Von Wallace, safety. 42. player

K’Von Wallace is in a different position from Blankenship. Things haven’t gone how he would have hoped in his career so far. This upcoming season will be his fourth in the league. Last season was his best… technically.

Wallace played in all 17 games. He collected 28 tackles including one that resulted in a loss of yardage. He also notched a pair of pass deflections. Wallace has a tendency to hit the players hard, and he has drawn his fair share of flags for unnecessary roughness. He needs to play in a more disciplined fashion and with more consistency. He’ll earn more playing time if he does because Philly could really use the help of an emerging star at safety.
