player. 54. . . . Zech McPhearson, cornerback. 27

In a passing league, don’t rule out the amount of attention a former second-day draftee like Zech McPhearson might earn.

The 2023-2024 NFL season will be Zech McPhearson‘s third at football’s highest level. During his freshman and sophomore campaigns, we all watched him play 278 defensive snaps and another 687 on special teams. Why is it then that we still aren’t certain about how we should view him as a reserve cornerback?

This is a big offseason for Number 27. He’s one of Philly’s better special teams players. He’s a good gunner on punt coverage, but how much can he contribute during the coming season as a cover guy if forced into duty? Judging by what we have seen so far, he isn’t bad, but he isn’t great either.

We were introduced to the former Texas Tech Red Raider when Philadelphia selected him during Round 4 of the 2021 NFL Draft. If the season began tomorrow, he’d probably be the first man up if Darius Slay or James Bradberry couldn’t go.

Here’s the thing. It’s a passing league, and with some other young guns on the roster (Greedy Williams, Mario Goodrich, and Josh Jobe), Philly could see if they can entice another team, especially if they land someone talented in the NFL Draft.

We’d only trade him if the offer is too good to ignore. If he was packaged in a deal with, perhaps, a pick that allowed the Eagles to move up in the draft or one that landed someone that upgrades the roster, we might be inclined to say yes. For now, placing him on the block is only to gauge if there’s any interest. Something tells us he’ll be on the 53-man roster.
