Biggest reason for Eagles' disaster with Kevin Patullo is painfully obvious

Kevin shouldn't be scapegoated like this.

The Philadelphia Eagles have finally moved on from Kevin Patullo after just one season as the offensive coordinator for the team.

Patullo has been on Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni's coaching staff since the beginning, as the two previously worked together in Indianapolis with the Colts. Sirianni had Patullo as the passing game coordinator before adding associate head coach prior to being the offensive coordinator.

All of the Eagles' offensive failures in 2025 seem to be solely on Patullo, as they finished in the bottom 15 in every offensive statistical category, including total offense, passing, rushing, and scoring. While Patullo for sure deserves his blame for what happened, there is one other guy who should be as accountable for the 2025 season as the offensive coordinator.

Nick Sirianni failed the Eagles organization and Kevin Patullo in so many ways

Sirianni took a chance on his friend Patullo running the offense and the plays. It didn't work out the way anyone wanted to, but that responsibility has to be on the head coach.

This is now the second time Sirianni has promoted one of his assistants to offensive coordinator, only for it to fail. Brian Johnson was the other back in 2023, and while that offense actually moved the ball down the field and was in the top 10, Jalen Hurts took a massive step back in his development, with a career-high 15 interceptions, which led to Johnson being fired after one season as offensive coordinator.

Happening once is fine, as bad hires happen, but now twice in three years? That falls on Sirianni, as he is failing to develop coaches properly.

The departure of Patullo hurts in two major ways. One, the Eagles are about to lose a good coach. While some won't believe that Patullo is a good play caller, he was excellent at game planning, as the first half of this season's games is evidence. He was just not good at anything beyond the second half of the game, which is where the offensive coordinator needs to be great at.

Two, Sirianni might have significantly done damage to Patullo's coaching career. Now, the name Patullo is tarnished not only in Philadelphia but around the NFL, as the 2025 Eagles' offense is the only thing that Patullo is going to be associated with for the rest of his career. Who knows what is going to happen with Patullo now, as he could have been a good offensive coordinator in the future, but Sirianni promoted him way too early.

Let's face the fact, too, that this (pun not intended) really hurts Jalen Hurts' development as a quarterback. Since college, Hurts has had only one offensive coordinator who stayed more than one year: Shane Steichen with the Eagles in 2021 and 2022, before getting the Indianapolis Colts job. Hurts needs stability and consistent development within the same system for consecutive years, but all this movement is undermining that, which unfairly makes NFL fans critical of him.

Moving forward, the next offensive coordinator for the Eagles needs to be someone Sirianni can hand the keys to and relieve himself of any game-planning duties, while also having prior experience in the role and serving as the play caller. At the same time, find someone who can stay for more than one year for the sake of Hurts' development.

While the idea of firing Sirianni is insane, given all the coaching changes happening in the NFL at the head coach level, the Eagles might have to start having that conversation soon enough. There are fans who are already frustrated with Sirianni, and this latest disaster with Patullo is only going to spark those talks even more this offseason and beyond.
