Stoutland University keeps elevating Eagles' offensive line beyond elite terrain
After Jason Kelce retired this past offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles lost their offensive line's biggest star. They didn't lose Lane Johnson though, and they didn't lose Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, or Cam Jurgens. Discussions about how good this unit is continue and for good reason.
Jeff Stoutland's unit continues to impress. Saquon Barkley grabs the headlines, but let's not forget the guys who make room for him to maneuver.
Lucky for the Eagles (and Jalen Hurts and Saquon), Philly's front is loaded with talent. They have a pretty good teacher, the best offensive line coach in the game.
The Eagles' offensive continues to clear paths for Saquon Barkley.
The legend is gone, but the Eagles still rank among the NFL's top offensive lines. Many place the Birds and Kansas City Chiefs at the top of the heap. Recently, Pro Football Network ranked them second among all 32 NFL offensive line units.
In Week 12, on Sunday Night Football, Landon Dickerson threw the alley-oop pass during one of Barkley's most brilliant runs. He offered a two-for-one block by Landon Dickerson. He took out Michael Hoecht first. He then sent Philly native Omar Speights flying.
Barkley's second TD run of the night called for more brilliance by the O-line, and they delivered. In total, Barkley finished with 255 rushing yards, but he didn't do it alone. He took some time to thank his bodyguards up front. It's a simple theory. Give credit to the O-line as a tailback. Game recognizes game.
Philly's O-line is unstoppable for another season.
Offensive line coach, Jeff Stoutland, is in his 12th season. The Eagles O-line has finished with a Top-5 ranking during eight. Left tackle Jordan Mailata is PFF's top-ranked tackle in the NFL. Lane Johnson has been his usually impressive self. He has allowed zero sacks through 11 games. Meanwhile, both guards have earned PFF grades of 75 or higher.
Saquon Barley has rushed for over 200 yards during four of the last seven wins. The Eagles' O-line continues to perform at an elite level. We call them Philly's Fab Five up front. A 2,000-yard rushing season by Saquon could be within reach.
