The Philadelphia Eagles sure got everyone talking about their stunning hire of now-former Green Bay Packers quarterback coach Sean Mannion to take on the offensive coordinator role.
Mannion has received praise from coaches and reporters who have worked with him over the last two years as a member of the Packers' coaching staff. Now his former teammates are speaking out about the young coach.
Former Eagles legendary Super Bowl-winning quarterback Nick Foles appeared on his "The SZN with Nick Foles and Evan Moore" podcast, where they discussed Mannion. Foles shared his experience with Mannion, when they both played for the St. Louis Rams in 2015, and how impressed he was with the then-rookie quarterback.
"Very impressive rookie. One of the more impressive rookies I've ever been around. You could tell right away with his work ethic, his knowledge of football at that point. Honestly, he always sort of I don't know if he lied to me when he said it but he had a photographic memory with his ability just to recall things either that or he just constantly studying, prepping, flashcards, whatever it may be but you could tell he was really diligent and then got into the coaching world the last couple of years. You knew he'd always be a guy that would climb the ladder, but I feel like he's climbing quicker than I thought and with the Philadelphia Eagles, which we just did a podcast earlier today talking about who they should go with. So, unique hire."
Sean Mannion continues to get praised by everyone
The more hype that is around Mannion, the better the hire is starting to sound for the Eagles. Mannion was a long-time backup quarterback in the NFL with three teams, passing for 573 yards and one touchdown against three interceptions.
While the stats may not impress, his coaching has been more impressive. In his first year as the quarterback coach in 2025, Mannion got Packers quarterback Jordan Love to have the best season of his career as he completed 66.3% of his passes (second best of his career) and only threw six interceptions (lowest of his career in a season he started 15 or more games).
Mannion has worked with the brightest minds in football, including Sean McVay and Matt LaFleur, which gives him an advantage as an offensive coordinator, allowing him to apply their knowledge to the Eagles' offense. His work as a backup also gave him a chance to get a jump-start on his coaching career, helping the starters.

The unproven track record is scaring Eagles fans, but Mannion has all the tools to be a great offensive coordinator and get Philly out of its offensive rut.
