Some mock drafts go crazy just to generate clicks and views, but this one involving the Philadelphia Eagles is so crazy that the actual plan for it might not be as bad.
NFL Network's Rhett Lewis shared his mock draft, in which the Eagles took Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. While this decision would make any fan in Philly lose their minds, Lewis has a plan in place for them.
"R-E-L-A-X.While there has been no shortage of drama surrounding the Eagles and QB Jalen Hurts, I'm not advocating for drafting a replacement here, although Philly has had a habit of accumulating quarterbacks and then acquiring value by moving them down the line. This, however, feels like a potential landing area for Simpson via trade, especially if a team believes the Browns could be looking to select the Alabama product with their second first-round pick at 24. And instead of trying to predict which QB-needy organization will be desperate enough to make this move, I'm keeping the Eagles as a placeholder in this mock to highlight the tantalizing leverage they could hold when their turn comes around -- setting Howie Roseman up perfectly to work some of his customary wheeler-dealer magic."
Could the Eagles use Ty Simpson as trade bait in the draft
First off, it seems silly for the Eagles to select a quarterback just to hold out hope that someone would trade for him. What would make Eagles general manager Howie Roseman think he can get significant draft capital for Simpson?
If that is the case, and a team wanted to make a trade with the Eagles for Simpson, why not just make the trade before making the selection? The Chargers did it with Eli Manning: they selected him and then traded him to the Giants afterward, but it simply doesn't make any sense for the Eagles.
More than likely, the Eagles would rather move up in the draft to get someone than move back. It's definitely possible, though, to move back in the draft if the trade offer is good.
Making the Simpson selection would only cause unnecessary drama in Philly when they have other pressing needs. The chatter about Hurts has been loud after that initial ESPN report, but to actually pick a QB in the first round is just insane.
