Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman gets a lot of praise for his work as a GM, and one of the reasons why is that the team does a good job drafting players, developing them, and signing them to extensions to remain with the team.

The franchise recently completed that cycle with defensive tackle Jordan Davis. Drafted in the first round of the 2022 Draft, Davis developed into an impact player and full-time starter over the last four seasons, so the Eagles signed him to a three-year extension worth $78 million this offseason. With one year left on his rookie deal, Davis is now under contract for the next four seasons.

Many people applauded the extension, praising it as the latest example of Philadelphia doing right by one of its homegrown players. However, not everyone is a fan of the size of the deal. NFL analyst Seth Walder, in a recent ESPN piece, graded each team’s offseason. For the Eagles, Walder gave the team an A, but said the move he disliked was extending Davis.

Eagles facing criticism for Jordan Davis extension

Walder called the Davis’ extension his lone critique of Philadelphia’s offseason, because he felt it “was a bit rich for a nose tackle.” Acknowledging how good the defender is against the run, Walder argued that Davis will need to show more as a pass rusher to justify the contract.

In his four seasons, Davis has played 64 games, starting 56. In those games, the defensive tackle has 162 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, but just eight sacks. However, his most productive pass rushing season came this past year, posting 4.5 sacks. That’s after having just one sack in 2024, and 2.5 sacks in 2023.

If Davis can continue to trend in that direction, he will be more than worthy of his contract. Either way, he’s a 26 year old defender who’s entering his prime, so the Eagles are excited to have him either way. If Jordan Davis can continue to elevate his game, the Eagles defense will be better because of it, and he could play his way to another extension.
