Philadelphia Eagles rookie wide receiver Makai Lemon faces more pressure than any new player who has entered the organization in the last five to 10 years.
Lemon has the unfortunate task of being viewed as A.J. Brown's replacement after the veteran was traded to the New England Patriots. It's not really a fair comparison since Lemon plays in the slot and Brown is on the outside, but that's the burden Lemon has to carry.
The start of Lemon's training camp has not been ideal, as he has missed multiple practices dealing with a hamstring injury. He was dealing with similar issues during OTAs as well, since he missed some workouts then.
Sure, there's no reason to overreact to what seems like a not-so-serious injury, but there is a bigger problem at hand. One that will bite the Eagles where it will hurt once the 2026 season begins.
Eagles are not getting the time needed from Makai Lemon to put in much-needed work
The important thing is that Lemon gets 100% healthy first before even letting him back on the practice field with pads. Getting banged up during training camp is part of the job for a wide receiver, but something bigger is brewing that will be a headache.
Philly is implementing a whole new offensive scheme with Sean Mannion now as the OC. The Eagles are trying to work out the kinks with quarterback Jalen Hurts and his new way of playing the quarterback position.
Lemon isn't there. He isn't getting a chance to run the routes and learn the offense physically, and he isn't building the chemistry with Hurts that is desperately needed right now.
Instead, Hurts is building rapport with other receivers like Dontayvion Wicks, Elijah Moore, and Darius Cooper. When Hurts needs to trust someone to make a catch, those are the guys who will get the looks over Lemon.
Now, let's get it straight that Lemon is going to be a great wide receiver in this league. His route running and quick feet shown already are enough to get everyone excited about the kind of receiver he will be.
If the Eagles are expecting him to make an immediate impact in 2026, at this rate, that's not going to happen. That might be okay for them, but it sounds like they want him to contribute from Day 1.
It would be unfair to Lemon to put that kind of pressure on him when he has barely practiced and is behind in his development. 2026 doesn't need to be considered a wash for Lemon, but it's not going to be the kind of season they want from him.

There's no reason to hit the panic button right now, but let's not pretend that Lemon not practicing is not a big deal. If the Eagles want him to do something in 2026, they better lower their expectations and not rush the rookie for the time being until he gets healthy and learns the offense. This is going to take a lot longer the longer he is off the field and hurt.
