The Philadelphia Eagles are all about giving out contract extensions to players they drafted to keep them in-house, and one is about to come up soon enough for them.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman rewarded Jordan Davis with the most expensive contract for a nose tackle in NFL history. Pro Football Focus writer Bradley Locker has another name in mind for the Eagles as the next contract extension, as he named defensive tackle Jalen Carter as one of the 15 extension candidates in the league.
"Carter didn’t quite enjoy the season he anticipated last year, recording only a 55.1 overall PFF grade while playing just 698 snaps. Still, he was monstrous as a pass-rusher with a 77.0 PFF pass-rush grade and 46 pressures generated. That’s exactly what Carter has done since breaking into the league, with his 13.5% pass-rush win rate slotting ninth among qualified interior defenders in that span. Philadelphia added Jordan Davis, Carter’s running mate, to their long list of talented players on large deals earlier this offseason. Carter should be next up, becoming the ninth Eagle to ink a contract worth at least $60 million — and an expected A.J. Brown trade would help catalyze the extension."
Jalen Carter is going to have to get paid next by the Eagles
It's wild to think that earlier in the offseason, there were rumors the Eagles were going to include Carter in a trade package for Maxx Crosby. Now the topic is when Philly will lock Carter in a long-term contract extension.
The Eagles picked up Carter's fifth-year option, as he will be receiving $27.1 million in 2027, the second-highest among the 2023 draft class, behind Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers with $27.3 million. More than likely, though, Carter is never going to see that $27.1 million in 2027 because he'll end up with more than that.
Many believe Carter is in line to reset the defensive tackle market after making the Pro Bowl two years in a row in a three-year NFL career. Expectations are that Carter is looking at somewhere north of $30 million per year on his next contract.

Last year was an outlier with Carter dealing with injuries, but when he was on the field, he was the best defensive player and still made the Pro Bowl with 11 starts. The Eagles would be crazy not to get Carter in on a long-term contract and move on either before the 2026 season or right at the beginning of the 2027 offseason.
