2 Eagles legends land on list of the top 25 NFL running backs since 2000
There are anomalies here and there, Adrian Peterson and Frank Gore for instance, but an NFL running back's career is typically a short one. They play the game's most punishing position. Many franchises try to find ways not to pay them. Think of how shocked we were when the Philadelphia Eagles signed Saquon Barkley.
When it's all said and done, he has an opportunity to be remembered as one of the greats if he stays healthy. He may not need to stay long to do so. The Birds typically don't hang on to tailbacks for long.
No Eagles RB has ever rushed for 10,000 yards which is typically the benchmark of something extraordinary. They have had some great ones however including their all-time leading rusher. Recently, he and another franchise legend landed on a list with some other of pro football's immortals.
LeSean McCoy and Brian Westbrook both crack FanDuel's list of the 50 greatest running backs since 2000.
We're almost a quarter century into this millennium. We've seen a ton of great football during that time. We've seen three Eagles Super Bowl appearances (they've made the dance four times total). We've seen a Super Bowl win. Over the years, we've seen some good tailbacks.
Two of the best to ever do it in midnight green found their way on FanDuel's list of the top NFL running backs since 2000. Check out this list. Check out number 7 and number 25.
The names alone bring back so many memories, don't they?
Brian Westbrook - 2002-09
Brian Westbrook was a third-round NFL Draft choice in 2002. Who knew the Birds had found a legend? He spent eight seasons in the City of Brotherly Love (2002-2009) before ending a respectable career with the San Francisco 49ers.
He earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 2007. He is a two-time Pro Bowler (2004, 2007) and a Philadelphia Eagles 75th Anniversary Team member. He has also been enshrined in the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame. He's currently third all-time in franchise rushing yards (5,995).
LeSean McCoy - 2009-14
Philly's all-time leading rusher is a man we refer to as 'Shady'. He racked up 6,792 yards rushing in Eagles green. We're still pissed at Chip Kelly for his dismissal.
Shady enjoyed three more stops before retiring in September of 2021: the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He won two Super Bowl rings as a member of the latter two. Philly is where his heart lies though.
Still ticked at Chip Kelly for shipping him off, he still bleeds green and isn't shy about saying that. During his career, he was a two-time First-Team All-Pro (2011, 2013) and a six-time Pro Bowler (2011, 2013–2017). He led the NFL in rushing yards in 2013.
He led the NFL in rushing touchdowns leader in 2011 and is an NFL 2010s All-Decade Team member. This season, he was inducted into the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame. We think he has an argument for enshrinement in Canton, Ohio.
Stay tuned! Oh, and if you're interested, Saquon Barkley is currently ranked 34th. He may have a chance to climb the ladder.
