Theories after the Eagles announce early Week 4 roster moves

As always, the Eagles did some early-week roster shuffling ahead of Week 3's game.

If you're new to this, you're probably beginning to understand why every Philadelphia Eagles fan you have ever met has told you that 'We can never get too high after a win or too low after a loss'. If you've watched the Eagles so long that you've lost track of how many years you've been doing so, you're very aware of the same concept.

Philly couldn't afford to get too high after beating the Green Bay Packers in Week 1. Employing the 'one game at a time approach' is always wise. It shouldn't have mattered that the lowly Atlanta Falcons were the opponent in Week 2.

We aren't saying the Birds went into the game cocky. We don't know that, but we do know this. We certainly didn't see their best effort on Monday Night Football.

We also don't know if a hangover stemmed from that one, but we didn't expect to see more questionable decision-making by Nick Sirianni. Thank Heaven for the defensive effort because the offense was sluggish. Philly stole a win and finally ended a jinx, but that win would prove costly.

Britain Covey's trip to the injured reserve highlights a few Eagles early Week 4 roster moves.

The news shouldn't shock anyone. We expected Britain Covey would be added to the Eagles' injured reserve once we learned the shoulder injury he sustained in Week 3's win involved a broken bone that would sideline him for multiple weeks. He's beloved by his teammates. Following the news, two of the Eagles team captains offered a pick-me-up.

The good news is this. The injury isn't season-ending. He'll be back hopefully for the back half of the season.

Philly also announced two other moves on Tuesday. Jack Stoll has been signed to the active roster. John Ross is back to fill the open spot on the practice squad created by Stoll's elevation. Here's a theory about each of those decisions.

Jack Stoll's elevation

The news involving Jack Stoll's elevation isn't surprising either. We knew he'd be signed after the New York Giants released him during roster cutdowns. In 2021, he made the Eagles Week 1 roster as a rookie.

He has appeared in 56 games with the franchise. That includes 28 starts as well as five postseason Eagles appearances.

Dallas Goedert is one of the rare NFL tight ends who's both an elite receiver and blocker. Grant Calcaterra is a decent pass catcher but can't block to save his life. It's easy to see why Stoll is back in the mix.

John Ross has returned

Philly's decision to bring John Ross back isn't surprising in the wake of Covey's trip to the IR. He's a speedster. It didn't help him earn a roster spot after the preseason, but he's a speedster nonetheless. He gives the special teams unit another option as a returner.

Naturally, Ross will have to be elevated from the scout team on game days for that to happen, but Parris Campbell is ahead of him on the depth chart. This probably means something else. A.J. Brown still isn't ready to return. Johnny Wilson needs to do some with his opportunity.
