Running Back

  1. Ryan Mathews
  2. Darren Sproles

Philadelphia’s group of running backs is uninspiring to say the least. Ryan Mathews will be 30 years old before we know it and has an extensive is injury history. When he’s actually on the field, Mathews is a solid back, but nothing out of the ordinary. He is prone to fumbling the football and isn’t a huge threat as a pass catcher out of the backfield.

Darren Sproles, on the other hand, is always a threat to make a big play, whether it’s on the ground, through the air or on a punt return. But like Mathews, Sproles isn’t the ideal age for a running back with a heavy workload. At 33 years old, Sproles is in the twilight of his career and it won’t be long before his time in Philadelphia comes to an end.

Behind Mathews and Sproles, the Eagles’ best running backs are Kenjon Barner, who isn’t even guaranteed a roster spot, and fifth-round rookie Wendell Smallwood.

It’s pretty fair to assume the Eagles will be looking to take a running back relatively high in the 2017 NFL Draft.
