Four Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp Battles Worth The Wait
By Matt Giraldi
Training Camp Battle #1: Nelson Agholor vs. Paul Turner
Both receivers caught a break when the Eagles released Dorial Green-Beckham last week. Competition for snaps at wide receiver is going to be difficult. According to Warren Sharp, last season the Eagles ran 31% of their plays using “12 personnel” which only utilizes two wide receivers. An additional 58% of their plays used three wide receivers. It’s relatively safe to say who the top three receivers are on the Eagles.

If we have learned anything over the years however, it’s that injuries occur when they’re least expected. Sometimes, breakouts do as well. For Agholor, he’s entering his third season in the NFL. That used to be when receivers started to improve significantly. Patience, no longer a virtue in the not for long league, is wearing thin when it comes to Agholor though. Perhaps that’s why his reported improved performance thus far this offseason comes with a grain of salt.
As for Turner, fans became obsessed nearly a year ago during training camp. Of course, Turner failed to make the 53-man roster last season. It has only gotten tougher for the undrafted receiver out of Louisiana Tech. Nothing new for a guy like Turner. He will have the opportunity to fight for that spot this year, and Agholor likely will be his most vulnerable target. At the very worst, he will be looking to grab a spot on the Eagles’ practice squad.
