Wendell Smallwood, RB

We said it last year that Wendell Smallwood is heading into a make or break season, despite being in the league for only a year. With that second season behind us, it is evident that Smallwood doesn’t have much of a future on the Eagles. He showed a little bit of promise in his rookie season, but his second and third string reps were nothing to brag about.

Smallwood had his chance to wow his coaches last preseason, but he failed to do so. The former fifth-round pick spent more time injured on the sideline rather than on the field playing. And by the time the Eagles traded for Jay Ajayi, Smallwood spent his Sunday’s in street clothes like the rest of us.

At this point, Smallwood should consider himself lucky to have a spot on the 90-man roster still. After Corey Clement blew up in his rookie season, and Darren Sproles coming back for his last rodeo, it makes it very tough for a runner like Smallwood to get a shot at cracking the final roster. So seeing how things went last year, it’s not a matter of if Smallwood gets cut, it’s a matter of when Smallwood gets cut.
