Jordan Howard brings the power

The Eagles love their hybrid running backs. Guys who tend to be a bit undersized, but quick. Also, they can not only run, but they could be wide receivers if they really wanted to. That’s what Clement and Sproles brought to the table in 2017 and 2018. That’s essentially what Tevin Coleman or a T.J. Yeldon would’ve brought as well. But are we forgetting that the Eagles used power in their backfield recipe during their 2017 championship run?

You may hear fans resist the idea of trading for Howard because he’s not good at catching. Well, you know who else wasn’t a great pass catcher? LeGarrette Blount and Jay Ajayi. Those two guys were recognized for their power. And guess what? Using their power-style running back in 17′ made Clement a change of pace back, which helped him succeed during his rookie season. Last year, the Eagles lacked that, and Clement was in a Sophomore slump.

Bringing Howard to the table can help out the Eagles tremendously in short yardage situations, and on plays where they want to pound the ball up the middle. Last season, they didn’t have a back who could get that done. Even with one of the better offensive lines in the league, the Eagles were hardly effective in the ground game.

Maybe having zero power running out of the backfield for a majority of the season had something to do with that. With the sixth-most amount of carries in the league in 2018, Howard finished with 935 yards and nine touchdowns. That was considered to be a down year for Howard’s third season in the NFL. Funny, because the last time an Eagles running back managed to surpass 900 yards in a single season was with LeSean McCoy in 2014. Yikes.
