5 Philadelphia Eagles whose stock has fallen through 3 weeks
By Hunter Doyle
The majority of the Philadelphia Eagles struggles fall on Carson Wentz.
Let’s address the elephant in the room. Carson Wentz has obviously been awful through the first three weeks. There have certainly been some poor games from him in the past but he usually bounced back pretty quickly. That hasn’t been the case this year. From 2017-2019, he had just three games in which he threw two or more interceptions, and he threw just seven interceptions in each of those three seasons. In 2020, he has thrown two interceptions in each of his first three games. He’s also lost a fumble. That’s happened 20 times in his career.
Those numbers are especially disappointing when you consider the fact that the offensive line has improved since the Week 1 disaster. Wentz hasn’t had a completely clean pocket normally, but it hasn’t been enough of an excuse for his performance. He’s trying to fit the ball into tight windows, and he’s overthrowing and underthrowing wide-open receivers. Don’t blame the injuries. Guys have gotten open for Wentz. The mechanics have also regressed. Blame Press Taylor for that. Maybe the lack of work in the offseason is hurting him.
Regardless of all of that, Philadelphia expects more from its fifth-year quarterback and rightfully so. It’s not at the point where the ‘Birds’ shoulder consider benching him. Plenty of good quarterbacks have gone through similar struggles at this point in their careers, but this can’t continue. ’11’ needs to get it together on Sunday Night Football versus the San Francisco 49ers.
We saw flashes of the 2017 Wentz as he was on the move often versus Cincinnati, but despite the missed throws and poor decisions, he also made some pretty great throws down the stretch. He also led drives in the final minutes of each half to keep this team in the game. He needs to carry a little of that momentum into Week 4 and get back on track.
