Jalen Hurts report card vs. Raiders: Don’t be fooled by statistics
Jalen Hurts best throws
Much is made about Jalen Hurts’ up and down performances, but we have to remember that, though he’s never been universally praised for his accuracy, he has had a tendency to make some nice tosses. Unfortunately, those moments are often followed by some bad-looking reads and decisions.
Here are three of his better tosses from Week 7 though:
1. Early in this one, on 2nd and five. He delivered a beautiful throw to Dallas Goedert that moved the ball from Philly’s own 41-yard line to the Raiders’ 30-yard line. That helped set up the first touchdown of the game. This was a nice read and toss and one of the few times that Hurts looked comfortable.
2. With a little over nine minutes remaining in the second quarter, on 3rd and nine from Philly’s own 36, Hurts eludes pressure, escapes to his right, and delivers one across his body to DeVonta Smith who hauled in the pass at the Raiders 45-yard line.
Jalen Hurts worst throws
1. Later on in the second half, Philly is faced with 2nd and nine from its own 26, the Eagles attempt a slant pass to DeVonta Smith. Jalen Hurts misses badly.
Not only would this have given the Eagles a first down but had Hurts led Smith on the play, number 6 could have gained some extra yardage.
2. On 3rd and ten with about 4:40 remaining, Hurts has to elude pressure again. He escapes to his right but delivers an inaccurate pass behind Kenneth Gainwell that would have set the Eagles up with a better shot of converting on 4th down.
Maybe this one’s a moot point because Philly converted on 4th and ten one play later as Hurts made a pretty throw to Dallas Goedert.
3. The deep ball toss (and miss) to Quez Watkins might have been one of the uglier misses of the season. Quez had a couple of steps on two receivers. You can argue that pressure was in Jalen’s face. You can also recognize that he should have recognized that one and released the ball sooner.
