Immediate questions after Eagles 2nd preseason game that need more immediate answers
Can Marcus Mariota lead the Eagles to a victory if, Heaven forbid, something happens to Jalen Hurts?
Okay, so here's the thing. Marcus Mariota has never completed a high percentage of his pass attempts. As a matter of fact, his career mark stands at 62.6 percent (and 60.3% in two playoff starts). With the way he has performed and after watching him quit on the Atlanta Falcons last season, one has to ask the question.
How confident are you that Mariota can win a game if forced to step in should anything unfortunate happen to Jalen Hurts? Here's a better question. What if one of those games comes during that tough stretch when the Birds face that gauntlet from Week 11 to Week 15?
We know he's going to be around. Regardless of how well Tanner McKee plays. Mariota will be this team's QB2 for now, but the eyeball test tells us there are issues.
Is there any chance that some of the fan favorites (Trey Sermon, Eli Ricks, and Joseph Ngata) make the roster?
We're human, and as Philly sports fans we love underdog stories, even if they're fictional tales like the one belonging to Rocky Balboa. Trey Sermon, Eli Ricks, and Joseph Ngata all have their fan clubs, but if we were to make educated guesses, we'd bank on Trey landing on the practice squad and Ricks and Ngata clearing waivers after final cuts to join him there.
Sermon isn't going to leapfrog Kenneth Gainwell, D'Andre Swift, Rashaad Penny, and Boston Scott. The Eagles figure to keep six corners, and Ricks is behind Darius Slay, James Bradberry, Avonte Maddox, Kelee Ringo, Josh Jobe, Zech McPhearson (if he's healthy), and maybe, Mario Goodrich and Mekhi Garner on the depth chart.
Ngata has made some plays, and there are plays he'd like to have back, but with A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Quez Watkins, Olamide Zaccheaus, and Greg Ward ahead of him, he may be battling Tyrie Cleveland, Johnny King, Deon Cain, and Jadon Haselwood for what might be one available spot on the 53-man roster.
